The Greater Southern New Jersey Korean American Association (GSNJKAA) awards scholarships totaling $5,000 to Senior High students of Korean heritage. This award includes a certificate of recognition and attendance at the award ceremony during the Choo-Seok Festival.
I. Program Objective
• To encourage future leaders of Korean-American Community
Ten scholarships are offered:
• First Place: $1,500
• Second & Third Place: $800 each
• Fourth, Fifth & Sixth Place: $500 each
• Seventh, Eighth, Ninth & Tenth Place: $100 each
II. Eligibility and Application Requirements
1. Am I Eligible?
To be eligible for the award you must meet all the following general eligibility requirements:
• Must be a high school student of Korean heritage, who will become a Senior as of September 2007
• Must have obtained a grade point average of not less than 3.0
• Must apply for an admission to College and/or University
• Must be resident in Southern New Jersey
• Must be willing to contribute to and support the works of Korean American Community of New Jersey
2. How Do I Apply?
In order to be considered, you must follow these steps and submit an application package by August 31, 2007.
1) Complete and sign the Application Form
2) Choose one of topics listed below and write an Essay (must use the form provided, maximum two pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman 11 pts)
Essay Topics:
a) To be Korean-American
b) Who do you think you are?
c) Generation gaps
3) Submit Junior transcript through the spring semester 2007.
4) Attach two letters of recommendation (one from school faculty and another from Community leader such as Pastor, Organization Leader, etc.)
3. How Are Decisions Made?
The Greater Southern New Jersey Korean American Association College Scholarships are intended to encourage and support capable and potential Senior High students of Korean heritage who are the future leaders of the Korean-American Community.
The information is drawn from your application, essay, transcript and recommendations. The Selection Committee considers and balances a variety of factors including:
• Academic Achievement
• Community Services
• Personal Qualities
• Future Leadership
The final 10 applicants will be selected for an interview. The date and time for the interview will be notified separately. The award presentation will be held at the Choo-Seok festival on Sat. September 22, 2007.
