42 youth and young adult pilgrims from my Conference went to Taize, the Ecumenical Christian Community, in France Summer this year. About 5,000 youth and young adults from 69 nations come to the Taize every year. The worship at the Taize is so simple – Silence, Repeating Chorus, and another Silence. iPods, cell phones, or any computer or electronic devices are not allowed there. But what those youth and young adults are sharing is something shocking….
“Silence that allows the Holy Spirit to tailor his message to the individual.”
“The songs sung during worship stay with you all day. Wherever you walk, someone is singing or humming a chant. The songs penetrate so deeply.”
“The simple, repeating chorus of each song touched my heart. As we repeated the songs, I moved further away from thinking of me, and closer to the presence of God.”
“It’s simplicity and authenticity. Like a wave in the ocean, it just moves you along with it.”
“Praying three times a day isn’t really bad. Actually, I think it was a positive way to keep a relationship with God.”
“The fact that I could go to church three times a day, seven days in a row, and NOT be bored.”
I agree that the technology is a good tool for the worship and it does attack people. However, does it really make people experience the Presence of God? Is it really worth to sacrifice time and energy? |
